Sadly, it seems that attitudes around mental health and depression haven't really changed in recent years, however much people say they are more 'enlightened' these days. Irish hammer, even with comments like that I really hope you don't ever have to suffer

Depression is one cunt of an illness to have. I tried to commit suicide twice, not cry for help type scenarios either. I was branded selfish etc by members of my own family and friends. Being called that is one shit thing to say. When you are 'in that moment' you are so tunnel visioned and out of body like, any rational though process goes out of the window. It's not the type of thing you plan for or premeditate (not in my case anyway). I literally had no idea of what I was doing.

It doesn't discriminate. Money, support, background, whatever. It's one big leveller in that respect
Fuck it, I'll stop there.

What's the book about and why is it so moving? I feel sorry for him but people have far harder lives than he did especially with all his money he had.

I might read this, as someone who suffers from mental illness I can appreciate how it can grip you and take you down.

One of the most moving books I've ever read. You really want him to pull out of it but you know what's going to happen.
BTW Irish Hammer is a trolling bellend.

One of the most affecting books I've ever read. Trescothick's biography was also excellent on a similar topic, but this one - whether just because of the obvious infinitely sadder ending, or the therefore necessary distance with it being written by his friend while at once seeming objective enough to be reliable but also intensely personal and intimate, or numerous other factors or a combination of all that - well, just wow. One of a very select few sports books to make it onto my bookshelf (the joys of flat living, most of my books are in boxes under the bed) even though I've not been able to bring myself to pick it up again despite being tempted on several occasions. As daft as it sounds, I saw this post when it first came up and wanted to reply but haven't been able to til now.

Seriously, ought to be top of the list for anyone who hasn't yet read it, unless they're a complete heartless bastard. It may sound pretentious out of context but it really isn't - the poems to his wife, and the contrast between them, is properly heartbreaking. It's probably helped by the fact I do have an insight into the issues within plus an interest in German football (couldn't tell you why, really) and so I was aware of him and his promise towards the end of his career and remember the news at the time, but he really does come across as a thoroughly decent and highly intelligent, caring chap. Maybe that shouldn't make a difference, but it does make it more affecting in a way, especially with the insight he had into his problem but which still wasn't enough in the end.

Louis Van Gaal does not come out of it well AT ALL. Made me genuinely worried for any Man Utd players with similar issues at the time I read it. As the book makes plain (as with Trescothick's), it really doesn't matter how much you're paid or whatever your personal circumstances are if you've got a demon in your head.

wasn't really about his daughter. he was dogged with depression and it just got the better of him.

Have not read the book and dont really want to, kept his depression to himself by all accounts, maybe should of reached out for help but aint that easy i guess, the death of his 2 year old daughter had a lot to do with it IMO, having to come to terms with that must have been awful

RIP

Up there with 'a million little pieces' for the book with the most bullshit it.

Still, a story has to be more dramatic to sell
